Cal Poly Sweeps UC Irvine 7-0 in Final Road Match

IRVINE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team throttled UC Irvine in its final regular season road match Monday, sweeping singles and doubles play en route to a 7-0 victory over the Anteaters.
Graduate student Melissa LaMette, juniors Romane Mosse and Eliza Bates and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock all went undefeated in singles and doubles as the Mustangs (9-8, 4-3 Big West) bounced back from a narrow 4-3 defeat at Cal State Fullerton on Friday in commanding fashion.
The Mustangs opened the dual with a dominant showing in doubles against the Anteaters (to capture the doubles point for the 12th time this season. LaMette and Mosse rolled to a 6-0 win at the No. 2 to move to 8-5 on the year and then Bates and Buntrock clinched it with a 6-0 victory at No. 3 to secure their sixth straight win and improve to 6-1 on the season. Fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle were leading their doubles match at No. 1 by a comfortable 5-1 margin when the point was clinched.
Buntrock was the first to finish her singles match, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 to increase her winning streak to three and move to 9-6 this spring. Then Delanie made quick work of her opponent at No. 1, coasting to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The remaining four singles matches all went to a third set, with the Mustangs emerging victorious in all of them. Bates clinched the dual win for Cal Poly with a come from behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6. Mosse jumped up two spots in the lineup and secured a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 win to grab her 10th straight victory and improve to a remarkable 13-4 on the season and 6-1 in Big West play.
Sophomore Alexandra Ozerets and LaMette both outlasted their opponents in their matches, winning third-set tiebreakers. Playing at the No. 2 spot for the first time in her career, Ozerets won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) to move to 11-6 this spring and 5-2 in conference play. LaMette finished off the sweep for the Mustangs with a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) comeback victory at No. 4.
Cal Poly returns home this week for its final two matches of the season, hosting UC Riverside on Friday and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. Both matches start at 1 p.m. at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
