SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Finishing under the lights at the San Luis Obispo Country Club, the Cal Poly women's tennis team suffered a hard-fought 4-3 Big West defeat to Long Beach State on Friday night.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs (7-7, 2-2 Big West) showed tremendous grit while battling rain delays, wind and cold conditions. The match was originally scheduled to be played at the Mustang Tennis Complex at noon Friday, but was moved to the San Luis Obispo Country Club due to rain. The dual started around 3:15 p.m. and ended nearly five hours later.
In doubles, LBSU (11-5, 5-1 Big West) won at the No. 1 spot, but junior Eliza Bates and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock kept the Mustangs' hopes of capturing the doubles point alive with a 6-3 victory at No. 3. The duo improved to 3-1 together this season. It all came down to No. 2 and graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse battled until the bitter end, coming up just short in a tiebreaker 7-5.
After doubles, play on the court stopped for well over an hour due to rain. Once action resumed around 6 p.m., the Beach took a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 1 singles, but the Mustangs quickly leveled the dual at 2-2 with straight-set victories from sophomore Alexandra Ozerets at No. 3 and Mosse at No. 5. Ozerets cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win to improve to 9-5 this spring and secure her first career victory while playing at the No. 3 spot. Mosse upped her match winning streak to seven to move to a team-best 10-4 this spring.
Long Beach then earned wins at No. 4 and No. 6 to close out the dual.
At No. 2, junior Peyton Dunkle grabbed a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) victory to improve to 8-4 this year.
Cal Poly hosts Hawai'i at noon Sunday at the Mustang Tennis Complex to close out the weekend. The dual will be a rematch of last year's Big West Championship.
