SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In its final nonconference match of the season, the Cal Poly men's tennis team gave No. 47 Pacific everything they could handle Thursday at the Mustang Tennis Complex but came up just short, falling 4-2.
The Mustangs (7-8) started the dual strong, securing the doubles point over the Tigers (15-1), who have now won 14 straight matches. Redshirt senior Joe Leather and senior Noah Berry teamed up for a 6-3 victory at the No. 3 spot and then freshmen Raz Haviv and Sean Kamyshev sealed the deal with a 6-4 win at No. 2, helping the duo improve to 5-3 together this season.
Redshirt senior Colter Smith and junior Bastiaan Weststrate, the 87th ranked doubles pairing in the country, were all knotted up at 5-5 with the No. 60 doubles tandem in the nation at the No. 1 spot when Cal Poly clinched the doubles point.
In singles, Pacific was able to gain a 2-1 advantage with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, but Weststrate leveled the match at 2-2 with an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 5.
Then the Tigers earned a pair of three set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 to secure the dual victory. Redshirt senior Fernando Fonseca fought valiantly in his match at No. 3, but fell short via a third set tiebreaker.
Cal Poly remains at home to host Big West foe UC Davis at noon Tuesday at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
