Men's Tennis Cruises Past UC Davis

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Thanks to some stellar singles and doubles play, the Cal Poly men's tennis team secured a crucial Big West home victory over UC Davis on Tuesday at the Mustang Tennis Complex, downing the Aggies 4-1.
The Mustangs (8-8, 3-1 Big West) started off the match in dominant fashion, rolling to the doubles point. Redshirt senior Colter Smith and junior Bastiaan Weststrate, the 90th-ranked doubles pairing in the country, grabbed a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 spot and then redshirt senior Joe Leather and senior Noah Berry clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 3. With the victory, Smith and Weststrate improved to 11-2 as a pairing this season and 4-0 in Big West play.
Cal Poly is a perfect 8-0 as a team in Big West doubles play this spring.
In singles, the Mustangs quickly took a 2-0 advantage thanks to a decisive 6-0, 6-4 win from freshman Sean Kamyshev at No. 5. The Aggies (10-9, 2-3 Big West) made it 2-1 with a win at No. 3, but Cal Poly responded with some strong performances at No. 4 and No. 6 to clinch the dual.
First, freshman Raz Haviv snagged a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 6 to move to 2-0 in conference play and then Weststrate locked up the match for the Mustangs with a straight-set win at No. 4.
The Mustangs currently sit in third place in the Big West standings with a 3-1 record.
Cal Poly hosts No. 49 UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m. Saturday in its final regular season home match.
