LEOPARD DISTANCE CARNIVAL LIVE RESULTS
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program heads to Southern California this week, splitting the team between a trio of competitive meets.
The Mustangs' top distance runners are slated to take part in the coveted Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University this Thursday through Saturday, while a handful of distance runners will race in the Leopard Distance Carnival hosted by University of La Verne on Friday. The rest of the squad, including Cal Poly's sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and vaulters, will compete in the Long Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Jack Rose Track.
Links to live results for all three meets can be found above and on the Cal Poly track and field schedule page on GoPoly.com. A free livestream of the Leopard Distance Carnival is available here while all three days of the Bryan Clay Invitational can be watched live on FloTrack with the purchase of a subscription. Follow Cal Poly track and field on Instagram (@calpolytfxc) and X/Twitter (@CalPolyTrack_XC) for live updates on all the action.
The best teams and athletes in the country will descend upon Cougar Athletic Stadium for the Bryan Clay Invitational, which features high-level distance races under the lights every night. Three Mustangs are slated to compete on the opening day of the meet Thursday to get this week's action underway. Juniors Nina St. John and Bryce Kueker, and redshirt sophomore Michael Chambers will all race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Other notable entries for Cal Poly at Bryan Clay include Davis Bove and Spencer Pickren in the men's 1,500, Carissa Buchholz and Tatiana Cornejo in the women's 5,000 and Will Fallini-Haas in the men's 5,000. Bove, a two-time Second Team All-American in the men's indoor mile, posted the third-fastest 5,000 time in school history (13:48.0) at the Stanford Invitational less than two weeks ago and currently owns the second fastest indoor mile time (3:58.0) in program history. Pickren is currently No. 5 all-time in the men's 1,500 (3:43.29) and the school record holder in the indoor 3,000.
Fallini-Haas recorded the fifth-fastest 5,000 time in program history (13:55.11) at the Stanford Invitational. It was his first race on the track since competing in the 2022 Big West Track & Field Championships.
Cornejo is looking to climb into the Cal Poly record books in the women's 5,000 outdoors after doing so indoors just over two months when she obliterated the indoor program record in the event at the Husky Classic by nearly 22 seconds with a time of 16:01.47. Buchholz is No. 2 all-time in the women's indoor 5,000 (16:23.14).
Events for the Mustangs at the Beach Invitational start at 10 a.m. Friday. Cal Poly has over 35 athletes entered in the meet including Lexi Evans, Logan Hays and MacGregor TeSelle. At the Mark Conover Classic three weeks ago, Evans climbed to No. 3 on the Mustangs' all-time list in the women's pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, 7.5 inches, currently tied for No. 19 in the West Region this season and No. 33 in the nation. Hays, a freshman, also broke into the top 10 in the women's pole vault during the meet with a personal best of 12-11.5, tied with two others for No. 9 all-time.
TeSelle is having quite the sophomore campaign and is entered in the men's 100-meter dash at the Beach Invitational. TeSelle nearly cracked the top 10 in the event at the Stanford Invitational, running a PR of 10.52 seconds, just .03 seconds off 10th all-time. The school record holder in the indoor 60 and 200 recorded a blistering time of 20.84 seconds at the Conover Classic to soar to No. 6 all-time at Cal Poly in the event. The 200 time was also the fastest by a Mustang since five-time All-American Kaaron Conwright in 1999.
At Long Beach, Cal Poly's sprint crew is looking to build off a strong showing at the Stanford Invitational where the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams both recorded their fastest times in 16 years.
Only six Mustangs are slated to take part in the Leopard Distance Carnival on Friday. Due to the number of entries the Bryan Clay Invitational received — including over 1,600 in the men's and women's 1,500-meter alone — the meet hosted by Division III La Verne at Ortmayer Stadium is serving as a bit of an overflow meet for those who were unable to make it into Bryan Clay.
Nine of Cal Poly's top throwers were in action this past week at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, highlighted by Travis Martin breaking his own school record in the men's hammer throw for the third time this season. He tossed a PR of 217-8 to capture first in the event and his performance earned him Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors.
The Mustangs enter this week's slate of competition boasting four top-25 nationally ranked event groups. In the latest edition of the USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings, Cal Poly was ranked No. 12 in the country in both the men's javelin and 5,000, while its men's hammer throw and women's high jump event groups both checked in at 24th.
Cal Poly heads back to Southern California next week to compete in the 64th annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 18-20 hosted by Mt. San Antonio College.
