4/13/2024 11:53:00 PM | Track and Field
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. — Graduate student Davis Bove, junior Melody Nwagwu and sophomore Tatiana Cornejo (pictured above) all posted top-five marks in program history and the men's 4x100-meter relay recorded its fastest time in 13 years to highlight action for Cal Poly track and field across a trio of meets in Southern California this Thursday through Saturday.
The Mustangs' top distance runners competed in the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational held at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Athletic Stadium this Thursday through Saturday. While competing against the best runners in the country, Cornejo and Bove both had standout performances.
On Friday night under the lights, Cornejo made history becoming just the fifth Mustang ever to run a sub-16-minute time in the women's 5,000-meter, posting a time of 15:56.19. The time was good enough to jump to No. 4 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the event and is the fastest ran by a Mustang since Second Team All-American Peyton Bilo in 2017. The performance continued an impressive track season for the Elk Grove, Calif. native who ran personal bests in the 800 and 1,500 at the Stanford Invitational two weeks ago and broke the school record in the indoor 5,000 at the Husky Classic in February.
Bove broke into the Mustangs' top marks list in another event Saturday night, running the fourth-fastest men's 1,500 time (3:42.04) in school history. At the Stanford Invitational on March 29, Bove posted the third-fastest 5,000 time in program history.
In his first race as a Mustang, junior Bryce Kueker recorded a personal best of 8:52.88 in the men's 3,000 steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational, less than 1.5 seconds off No. 10 all-time at Cal Poly.
Cal Poly's sprinters, jumpers, hurdlers and pole vaulters took part in the Long Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday, and Nwagwu and the men's 4x100 relay stole the spotlight during the meet.
Nwagwu soared to No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the women's triple jump, recording a significant personal best of 41 feet, 7.75 inches to secure a third-place finish in the event.
Junior Noah Bustos, freshmen Ryan Teeple and Baden Bunch, and sophomore MacGregor TeSelle helped the Mustangs post a time of 40.92 seconds in the men's 4x100 relay to place sixth. The time was the fastest by a Cal Poly 4x100 relay team since 2011.
In the women's high jump, freshman Melanie Castelli cleared a lifetime best of 5 feet, 7.25 inches to capture sixth, while sophomore Maia Garcia took 14th with a collegiate personal best (5-5.25). On the men's side, freshman Nathan Fifer recorded a collegiate PR (6-5) to place 12th in the event.
Sophomore Lexi Evans tied for fourth place (13-3.75) in the women's pole vault while senior Annie Hatzenbeler tied for 11th (12-10). Graduate student Shelby Daniele secured a sixth-place finish in the women's 100 with a wind-aided time of 11.61 seconds (+3.2m/s), while freshman Jordan Jackson matched her collegiate best in the 400 (55.93) to take ninth.
Senior Joey Souto grabbed seventh in the men's 400 hurdles (54.07) and sophomore MacGregor TeSelle earned 15th in the 100 with a wind-aided time of 10.40 (+4.2m/s).
Seven Cal Poly distance runners also raced in the Leopard Distance Carnival hosted by University of La Verne on Friday. Redshirt junior Erik Luu had a standout performance, winning the men's 1,500-meter at the meet with a PR of 3:51.65.
A number of Cal Poly's top athletes will head to Walnut, Calif. this coming Thursday through Saturday to compete in the 64th Mt. SAC Relays.
