SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — 13 members of the Cal Poly track and field team will descend upon Hilmer Lodge Stadium on the Mt. San Antonio College campus in Walnut to compete in the 64th Mt. SAC Relays this Thursday through Saturday.
The prestigious meet, which attracts some of the best track athletes around the world, can be seen live on RunnerSpace+ with the purchase of a subscription. Live results are also available here.
Only two Mustangs will participate in the exclusive meet Thursday as redshirt senior Kevin Schmitt is slated to compete in the men's javelin at 8 p.m. and redshirt junior Colton Swinth will race in the men's 10,000-meter at 8:20 p.m. Schmitt tossed a personal best of 201 feet, 10 inches in the javelin at last year's Big West Championships to place fourth and Swinth is the defending conference champion in the 10,000 with a PR of 30:31.78.
A total of six Mustangs will take part in individual events Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays with sophomore Rory Devaney getting action underway at 10 a.m. in the men's discus. Devaney is currently No. 5 all-time at Cal Poly in the event (176-8).
Junior Corban Payne is entered in the men's shot put, which starts at 1 p.m. Friday. Payne currently owns the fourth best mark in program history in the event (59-0.25). Graduate student Shelby Daniele will race in the women's 200 at 3:05 p.m., while sophomore MacGregor TeSelle hits the track just 30 minutes later to take part in the men's 200. Daniele matched her PR in the 200 of 23.57 seconds earlier this season at the Mark Conover Classic, which is third fastest in school history. TeSelle posted the sixth-fastest time in program history in the men's 200 (20.84 seconds) earlier this spring.
Fresh off a stellar performance at the Long Beach Invitational this past weekend, junior Melody Nwagwu is slated to compete in the women's triple jump at 4 p.m. Friday. Nwagwu moved up two spots to No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the event this past Saturday, recording a PR of 41-7.75 at Long Beach. Junior Isabella Rigby, No. 6 all-time in the women's discus, takes the stage at Mt. SAC at 5:30 p.m.
The men's 4x400 relay team caps off the second day of action for the Mustangs at Hilmer Lodge Stadium at 5:55 p.m. Friday. Seniors Joey Souto and Chase Walter, freshmen Alexander Franco and Levi Romero, and TeSelle could all potentially run legs on the relay. At the Stanford Invitational on March 30, Walter, Souto, Franco and Romero helped the men's 4x400 post a time of 3:12.63 — the fastest by the Mustangs in 16 years.
Junior Travis Martin and Devaney are the only Mustangs that will compete on the final day of the meet Saturday when they take part in the men's hammer throw at noon. Martin is the current school record holder in the event (217-8) and Devaney is No. 2 all-time (216-6).
Currently, Cal Poly boasts four nationally-ranked event groups — No. 5 men's javelin, No. 16 women's high jump, No. 17 women's pole vault, No. 19 men's hammer throw.
Next week, Cal Poly's full track and field team will be in action, splitting the squad between the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford on April 26 and the Fresno State Invitational on April 26-27. The two meets will mark the end of the regular season for the Mustangs.
