Mustangs Drop Nail-Biter at CSUN
3/9/2024 9:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — In its first Big West match in over a month, the Cal Poly women's tennis team dropped a nail-biter at CSUN 4-3 on Saturday at the Matador Tennis Complex.
The Mustangs (5-6, 1-1 Big West) opened the dual by capturing the doubles point for the seventh time this season. Graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse grabbed a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot to move to 6-3 on the season, but CSUN won at No. 3 meaning it all came down to the Dunkle sisters at the top spot. Fortunately, fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle came through clutch for the Mustangs, securing a 7-5 victory to improve to 8-2 this spring. It was the fifth straight victory for the doubles pairing. The doubles win also allowed Delanie to move to No. 4 in program history in career doubles victories in duals with 49.
In singles, Mosse and Delanie earned victories in straight sets to allow Cal Poly to take a 3-0 lead over the Matadors (6-1, 2-0 Big West). For Mosse, it was her fourth consecutive singles win at the No. 6 spot.
The remaining four singles matches were all tightly contested with three going to a decisive third set. Peyton (No. 2), LaMette (No. 3) and sophomore Alexandra Ozerets (No. 6) all won a set in their matches, but came up just short in the end. With the dual knotted at 3-3, the victor would be determined by the result at No. 4. Sophomore Kennedy Buntrock battled extremely hard, but lost both sets by way of a tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5).
The Mustangs will look to bounce back when they finish off their road trip to Los Angeles at 11 a.m. Sunday against Loyola Marymount.
