SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program is back on the road this weekend as they travel to Southern California for matches against Big West foe CSUN and Loyola Marymount.
First up is a battle with the Matadors at noon Saturday in Northridge, then Cal Poly will travel a little further south Sunday for a 11 a.m. showdown with LMU in LA.
The Mustangs (5-5, 2-0 Big West) are fresh off a 5-2 home victory over Santa Clara this past Sunday that allowed the team to snap a four-match losing streak. In that battle with the Broncos (2-5), Cal Poly secured the doubles point for the sixth time this season as the Mustangs' top two pairings secured victories. At the No. 1 spot, fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and her younger sister, Peyton Dunkle, coasted to a 6-2 win to improve to 7-2 on the season and 22-10 together in their careers. Last year, the duo earned All-Big West Second Team honors with a 15-8 record, tied for the fifth-most dual victories by a doubles pairing in a season in Division I program history.
With the doubles win, Delanie also moved into a tie with Amy Markhoff for the fifth most career doubles victories in duals in program history with 48.
Graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse clinched the doubles point for Cal Poly in the dual with Santa Clara, grabbing a 6-4 victory to improve to 5-3 this spring at the No. 2 spot.
The Mustangs won four of the six singles matches against the Broncos as Peyton, Mosse and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock all picked up wins in straight sets, while sophomore Alexandra Ozerets snagged a thrilling three-set comeback victory at the No. 5 spot. Mosse upped her winning streak to three at the No. 6 spot, while Peyton and Buntrock both moved to 6-2 on the season. Peyton is currently No. 3 in Division I program history in career winning percentage in dual singles matches (70.4%).
The Matadors (5-1, 1-0 Big West) are in the midst of a four-match homestand and will carry a two-match winning streak into Saturday's match, defeating Weber State 7-0 on March 3 and Louisiana Tech 4-2 on March 4. Last year, Cal Poly and CSUN faced off two times. The Matadors edged out the Mustangs 4-3 in the regular season matchup in San Luis Obispo, but Cal Poly got its revenge in the Big West tournament, defeating CSUN by a decisive 4-0 scoreline in the semifinals.
Sunday will mark the first meeting between the Mustangs and Lions since Jan. 28, 2018. Cal Poly will be looking for its first victory over LMU in 10 years. The Lions are 2-6 this season and most recently suffered a 5-2 home defeat to UC Santa Barbara this past Sunday. LMU hosts Penn State at 1 p.m. Friday before taking on the Mustangs.
Following this weekend's action, Cal Poly remains on the road to face UC San Diego on Friday, March 15.
