Mustangs Top LMU in Final Nonconference Road Match
3/10/2024 10:31:00 PM | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program finished off its road nonconference schedule in dramatic fashion Sunday, securing a 4-3 victory over Loyola Marymount at the LMU Tennis Center.
With the dual tied at 3-3, it all came down to junior Eliza Bates at the No. 6 singles spot. Playing in just her third singles match this season, Bates came up clutch, securing a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win to propel the Mustangs (6-6) to victory.
Cal Poly captured the doubles point for the eighth time this season with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. After the Mustangs came up short at No. 2, Bates and sophomore Kennedy Buntrock stepped up and grabbed a 6-1 win. Then fifth year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle clinched the doubles point for Cal Poly with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 to improve to 9-2 this season and 24-10 together in their careers. For Bates and Buntrock, it was their first win together as a doubles pairing this season.
In addition to Bates' singles win, junior Romane Mosse (No. 5) and sophomore Alexandra Ozerets (No. 4) both picked up straight-set singles victories to help Cal Poly soar past the Lions (3-7). Mosse has now won five straight singles matches.
The Mustangs head to La Jolla on Friday for a 1 p.m. match against UC San Diego.
