Mustang Men’s Tennis Starts Big West Play with Win Over Hawai’i

HONOLULU — Cal Poly men's tennis got off to a strong start to Big West play Saturday, going on the road to take down Hawai'i 5-2 in Honolulu.
The Mustangs (6-6, 1-0 BW) started off the match by taking the doubles point. The No. 3 duo of Fernando Fonseca and Joe Leather began things by winning their match 6-2 to improve to 2-0 together. The point was clinched by the No. 1 pair of Colter Smith and Bastiaan Weststrate, who kept their winning ways this year going, improving to 8-2 after winning their match 6-3.
In singles, it was freshman Raz Haviv getting things done first at the No. 6 spot, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Joe Leather then pushed the Mustangs' lead up to 3-0 after winning his match at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-3.
It was then Fonseca who clinched the victory for Cal Poly after he won at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 7-5. He is now 5-2 in singles play this season.
Also collecting a singles win was Colter Smith at the No. 5 spot. He won his match 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).
The Mustangs will look to keep their winning ways going next Thursday, April 4, when they head down to face UC Riverside for a 1 p.m. match.
