SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program made sure to make its only regular season home meet this spring one to remember. A total of six top-10 marks in school history were recorded and a school record was broken twice during the second annual Mark Conover Classic on Friday and Saturday.
The Mustangs captured 15 event victories across the two-day meet while battling competition from Big West foes UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Bakersfield, and Modesto College.
Junior Travis Martin and sophomore Rory Devaney helped the Mustangs open the meet in style on Friday. In the first event of the Conover Classic, Martin, a junior college transfer from De Anza College, shattered his own school record in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 216 feet, 5.5 inches on his second attempt. Martin broke Devaney's 2023 program record in the event in his first meet as a Mustang on March 8. However, Devaney didn't let Martin hold onto his new school record mark for long, recording the exact same mark (216-5.5) on his fifth and final attempt. Devaney and Martin now share the program record and the mark is the 11th best in the West Region so far this season and the 16th best in Division I. The duo claimed the top two places in the event at the meet.
Sophomore MacGregor TeSelle also had an historic performance on the opening day of the meet, posting the sixth-fastest time in school history in the men's 200-meter (20.84 seconds) to capture first in the event. It was the fastest time by a Mustang in the event since Kaaron Conwright, a five-time All-American, posted a time of 20.69 in 1999. Currently, the time is the 16th fastest in the West Region this outdoor season.Corban Payne celebrates recording the fourth-best
men's shot put mark in school history.
Corban Payne made plenty of noise on the final day of the meet Saturday, winning the men's shot put with a personal best of 59 feet, 0.25 inches — the fourth best mark in program history. It's the best mark in the event by a Cal Poly athlete in 24 years and currently No. 14 in the West Region and No. 26 in Division I. Payne bested his own previous best by 33 inches.
A pair of top-10 marks in school history were recorded in the women's pole vault Saturday. Sophomore Lexi Evans climbed to No. 3 on the all-time list in the event, clearing a collegiate best of 13-7.25 to secure first. The mark is tied for 11th in the West Region this outdoor season and 16th in Division I. In her first home meet, freshman Logan Hays soared to new heights in the pole vault, clearing a personal best of 12 feet, 11.5 inches to take second and move into a tie for ninth on Cal Poly's all-time list.
The Cal Poly men secured a total of 11 event victories during the meet. The Mustangs swept the 4x100 (41.41 seconds) and 4x400 (3:21.81) relays, and senior Joey Souto claimed the top spot in the 400 hurdles (53.35). Devaney won the discus (169-10) and junior Colby Neron led a first through fifth finish for the Mustangs in the javelin with a mark of 207-10.75. Freshman Isaac Knapp captured first in the high jump with a personal best (6-6.5), freshman Jonathan Yu won the long jump with a PR (21-5.5) and redshirt sophomore Michael Chambers earned first in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
On the women's side, Jadyn Snaer, Shelby Daniele, Anisa Rind and Melody Nwagwu led the Mustangs to a first-place finish in the 4x100 relay (46.62). Daniele also matched her personal best in the 200 (23.57), which is third fastest in school history, to place second. Sophomore Chase Kubinski and freshman Melanie Castelli both cleared 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump to tie for first in the event. Kubinski also grabbed second in the javelin. Junior Cadence Roy-Williams won the triple jump and was second in the long jump.
