Cal Poly Falls at CSUN
2/8/2024 10:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola scored a team-high 12 points and the Mustangs led for nearly the entire first half, but Cal Poly men's basketball came up short to CSUN on Thursday night 78-65 at the Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Four Mustangs knocked down multiple three pointers and Cal Poly forced 19 turnovers, but the Matadors (15-9, 6-6 Big West) used a 10-0 run to open the second half to pull away for the win.
Sophomore power forward Aaron Price, Jr. scored the opening basket on Cal Poly's first possession and the Mustangs held onto the lead for over 13 minutes of game time thanks to some strong defense and a few shots from distance. The Cal Poly advantage swelled to as many as 7 points with 9:34 remaining in the first half thanks to a three-pointer from graduate point guard Jarred Hyder, forcing a CSUN timeout.
The Matadors then went on a 13-2 run to take a 26-22 lead. However, the Mustangs came right back and retook it as junior power forward Paul Bizimana and freshman point guard Justin Page each knocked down a three-pointer to give Cal Poly a 28-27 advantage.
The two teams traded blows in the final moments of the first half before CSUN's Bryan Ndjonga hit a three-pointer with less than two seconds remaining to give the Matadors a 33-30 lead at halftime. The Mustangs held the lead for over 15 minutes in the opening half.
A slow start to the final 20 minutes of action by Cal Poly allowed the Matadors to create some separation and build a 13-point advantage just over four minutes into the second half. The Mustangs pulled within 9 points, but not any closer.
In addition to his 12 points, Jaakkola grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Senior Kobe Sanders finished with 10 points and five rebounds and dished out eight assists. Junior Joel Armotrading had 9 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field.
Cal Poly (4-20, 0-12 Big West) finishes off its road trip to Southern California at Long Beach State (14-9, 6-5) on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN+.
