LONG BEACH, Calif. — Four Mustangs scored in double figures but the Cal Poly men's basketball team came up just short Saturday in a tightly contested battle at Long Beach State, falling 77-68.
Graduate guard Jarred Hyder led the Mustangs with 21 points on an efficient 7-9 shooting. Freshman guard Quentin Jones also had a big game, going for 19 points in addition to six rebounds.
Senior guard Kobe Sanders did a little of everything, scoring 13 points while also grabbing six boards and dishing out six assists. Graduate center Tuukka Jaakkola, who became Cal Poly's all-time leader in career games played Saturday, added 12 points.
Despite being down 13-4 four minutes into the opening half, Cal Poly responded with a 14-4 run to take an 18-17 lead. It was a back-and-forth affair the rest of the first half as it was a close game at halftime with Long Beach State up 39-35 at the break.
The Mustangs continued to hang tight with Long Beach State in the second half, tying it at 52 with 10 minutes left. After Long Beach State took a 63-54 lead with six minutes left, the Mustangs roared back with a 9-0 run to tie at 63 with three minutes to go.
Cal Poly trailed by two with 1:30 remaining but were unable to garner the lead as Long Beach State finished the game on an 8-1 run.
