2/15/2024 10:06:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman guard Quentin Jones (above, center) grabbed a career best 10 rebounds Thursday evening and completed a first collegiate double-double with 11 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program sustained an 81-50 defeat to Hawai'i inside Mott Athletics Center.
Graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola added 10 points and nine rebounds for Cal Poly (4-22, 0-14), which led only once Thursday and for just 16 seconds as Hawai'i (15-11, 7-7) shot 55.8 (29-for-52) percent.
After establishing a new program record with his 129th career appearance at Long Beach State (Feb. 10), Jaakkola became the first Mustang in program history to reach 130 games played on Thursday.
Following a week's break, Cal Poly resumes action at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Feb. 22. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
During Thursday's matchup, a three-pointer from Cal Poly sophomore guard Isaac Spears midway through the opening half cut an early Hawai'i lead to 14-11. The Rainbow Warriors, however, kept Cal Poly to just one field goal during an ensuing eight-minute span to establish a 30-16 advantage late in the first half.
After taking a 35-20 lead into the break, Hawai'i scored 14 of the opening 16 points of the second half. The Rainbow Warriors, who finished 16-for-24 from the floor during the second half, led by as much as 33 points down the stretch.
