Cal Poly Sustains Thursday Loss at Cal State Fullerton
2/22/2024 9:18:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FULLERTON – Freshman guard Quentin Jones finished with a team high 14 points, but a late first-half scoring drought by the Cal Poly men's basketball program helped Cal State Fullerton pull away Thursday evening as the Mustangs dropped a 68-50 decision inside Titan Gym.
Senior guard Kobe Sanders added 10 points to stay in double-digit scoring figures through all 24 appearances this season for Cal Poly (4-23, 0-15) as the Mustangs kept Cal State Fullerton (12-15, 5-10) to a 40.3 (25-for-62) percent field goal mark. The Titans, however, knocked down 12 three-pointers and committed just seven turnovers.
Making just his second career start for Cal Poly, freshman guard Justin Page scored a career best nine points. Graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola grabbed a game high eight rebounds for Cal Poly.
Cal Poly next returns home to host UC Riverside on Saturday, Feb. 24. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Cal Poly held Cal State Fullerton to a 1-for-12 shooting start Thursday, but the Mustangs were unable to carve out more than a two-point lead to open the matchup.
Facing a 17-11 deficit with six-and-a-half minutes remaining before the break, Cal Poly received a pair of Jones three-pointers to cut its gap to one. The Mustangs, however, were kept scoreless during the final four-and-a-half minutes of the first half as the Titans took a 31-19 lead into the locker room.
The Titans then began the second half by limiting Cal Poly to a Jaakkola dunk and three free throws by graduate guard Jarred Hyder to stretch the advantage to 43-24 with 14-and-a-half minutes remaining.
A Sanders three-pointer with 10 minutes to go lowered Cal State Fullerton's lead to 48-38, but the Titans answered by scoring the next six points to keep the Mustangs at a distance.
