Cal Poly Ends Road Trip with Narrow Defeat to Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. — The Mustangs captured the doubles point for the fifth time this season and picked up a pair of singles wins, but it wasn't enough as Cal Poly women's tennis dropped a tightly-contested match at Fresno State on Sunday 4-3.
Cal Poly (4-5) secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1, Fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle rolled to a 6-1 win for their third straight victory, improving to 6-2 on the year. Sophomores Kennedy Buntrock and Alexandra Ozerets clinched the doubles point with a decisive 6-2 win at No. 3.
In singles, four of the six matches went to a third set, but Fresno State (6-4) secured wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 to take a 4-1 lead and clinch the dual.
Despite the dual already being clinched, graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse continued to fight until the bitter end in their respective matches at No. 3 and No. 6. They both dropped the first set in their matches, but rallied to emerged victorious in three sets. LaMette won her match 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 and Mosse 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Peyton and Ozerets each won a set in their singles defeats.
The Mustangs are now 4-1 in duals this season when they win the doubles point.
Cal Poly returns home for the first time in nearly a month to host Montana State on Friday, March 1, and Santa Clara on Sunday, March 3. Both matches are scheduled to start at noon at the Mustang Tennis Complex.
