FRESNO, Calif. — Sophomore Kennedy Buntrock earned a commanding victory in straight sets and junior Romane Mosse secured a thrilling three-set win, but Cal Poly women's tennis came up short to No. 39 BYU on Saturday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno.
The Cougars (8-1) won the doubles point in the neutral-site match, but fifth-year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle were able to capture a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 spot. The tandem improved to 5-2 on the season and 20-10 together in their careers.
In singles, Buntrock helped level the match at 1-1 with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot. She moved to 5-1 on the year.
Then BYU responded with wins at No. 2, No. 1 and No. 4 to clinch the dual.
Moose outlasted her opponent at the No. 6 singles spot, grabbing a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory to earn her fourth dual singles win as a Mustang. Graduate student Melissa LaMette was able to force a third set in her match at No. 3 before coming up short, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6.
All four of Cal Poly's losses this season have come against teams that are currently ranked.
The Mustangs (4-4) finish off a six-match road swing at noon Sunday against Fresno State.
