LIVE STATS — SUNDAY
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program will encounter another ranked team when they travel to Fresno this weekend for matches against No. 42 BYU and Fresno State at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
First up is a neutral-site match against the Cougars at noon Saturday, then the Mustangs cap their six-match road swing at noon Sunday against the Bulldogs. Live scoring is available for Sunday's dual and a link can be found above or on the Cal Poly women's tennis schedule page.
The Mustangs (4-3) are fresh off a trip to Arizona that saw them drop matches to a pair of opponents that are ranked inside the top 75 nationally in the latest ITA rankings. Cal Poly fell to No. 25 Arizona State and Grand Canyon, who is currently ranked No. 49 in the country, each by a 4-0 scoreline. All three of the Mustangs' losses this season have come against teams that are currently ranked.
Despite the defeats in the desert, junior Peyton Dunkle is still undefeated in dual singles matches this spring, boasting a 5-0 record. The Arroyo Grande native remains at No. 2 all-time in Division I program history in winning percentage in dual singles matches (73.1%) with a 30-11 career mark. While playing at the No. 1 doubles spot, Peyton and her older sister Delanie Dunkle are 4-2 this season.
Graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse, Cal Poly's No. 2 doubles pairing, are 4-1 on the year.
This marks the second straight year the Mustangs have squared off against the Cougars. Last spring at the Mustang Tennis Complex, Cal Poly suffered a 5-2 defeat to No. 54 BYU.
The Cougars are 6-1 this season, with their only loss coming at Utah 4-2 on Feb. 9. BYU's No. 1 singles player, Bobo Huang, is 5-0 this season and currently ranked No. 71 nationally. BYU will battle Fresno State at 2 p.m. Friday before facing the Mustangs.
Fresno State secured a 4-3 home victory over Cal State Fullerton on Feb. 16 to improve to 5-3 on the year. Just like the Mustangs, the Bulldogs were shut out in a pair of losses at Arizona State and Grand Canyon earlier this season.
The Bulldogs are led by senior Carolina Piferi, who is 6-1 in singles. Cal Poly will be looking to avenge a 5-2 loss at Fresno State last season.
With a 1-0 Big West record, the Mustangs are one of five teams that are still undefeated in conference play this year.
Following their trip to Fresno, Cal Poly returns home for the first time in nearly a month to host Montana State on Friday, March 1, and Santa Clara on Sunday, March 3. Both matches at the Mustang Tennis Complex will start at noon.
