Cal Poly Improves Seven Shots during Second Round at The Prestige

LA QUINTA – Freshman Louis Pilod remained under par for a second successive round and four Mustangs improved their opening-day scores, but the Cal Poly men's golf program – despite shaving seven shots off its Monday total – slipped from 13th place to 17th Tuesday at The Prestige.
During the team event on the par-71 Greg Norman Course at PGA West, Pilod added a two-under 69 that included three birdies to his opening round 67 and dropped one spot on the leaderboard into seventh with a two-day, six-under 136. Also shooting a 69 Tuesday was junior Baron Szeto (above), who – with four birdies – improved seven shots from his Monday opening round to jump from 93rd position to 67th with a two-day, two over 144.
Graduate student Austin Liu, however, dropped to 58th spot Tuesday after shooting a 75 during the second round. Graduate student Ben Quick collected two birdies Tuesday, improving four shots from Monday with a two-over 73. Junior Parker Mapes was 11 shots better on Tuesday, carding three birdies for an even-par 71.
Competing in the individual event on the par-72 Terra Lago North Course, senior Joey Zambri is in 17th place after following a Monday 70 with Tuesday's three-over 75. Junior Jackson Parrish improved to 27th place after producing two birdies Tuesday for a one-over 73.
As a team, Cal Poly's total of two-under 282 on Tuesday was seven shots better than Monday's finish, but the Mustangs still slipped from 13th place into a three-way tie for 17th alongside Baylor and Loyola Marymount.
The third and final round of The Prestige gets underway Wednesday morning.
