TEMPE, Ariz. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program wrapped up its trip to Arizona on Sunday, falling short to No. 25 Arizona State 4-0 at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Sun Devils (6-3) won the doubles point, but Cal Poly's No. 1 doubles pairing earned an impressive victory. Fifth year Delanie Dunkle and junior Peyton Dunkle captured a decisive 6-2 win over Arizona State's Patricija Spaka and Chelsea Fontenel, who were 5-2 on the season entering Sunday's dual. The Dunkles improved to 4-2 on the year and 19-10 in their careers as a tandem.
ASU clinched the dual with three straight-set singles victories at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6. Delanie and sophomore Alexandra Ozerets both came up short in matches against nationally ranked opponents — No. 77 Giulia Morlet and No. 97 Emilija Tverijonaite.
Sunday marked the second straight day the Mustangs (4-3) lost to a team that qualified for the 2023 NCAA Tournament, dropping a match at Grand Canyon 4-0 on Saturday.
Cal Poly will look to get back on track next weekend when they travel to Fresno to face BYU on Saturday, Feb. 24, and Fresno State on Sunday, Feb. 25.
