Mustangs Drop Match at Grand Canyon
2/17/2024 5:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Cal Poly women's tennis couldn't slow down a red-hot Grand Canyon team on Saturday, falling 4-0 at the GCU Tennis Facility.
Despite the defeat, the Mustangs (4-2) fought valiantly against the Antelopes (8-1), who have now won five straight matches and not allowed their opponents to score a single point during that stretch.
For just the second time this season, Cal Poly dropped the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and No. 3. Graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse were leading 5-4 at the No. 2 doubles spot when GCU clinched the doubles point. The duo is still undefeated this season (4-0).
In singles, the Antelopes, who won the 2023 WAC Tournament title to book a trip to the NCAA Tournament, won at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 to secure the dual win. Cal Poly was neck-and-neck with GCU in nearly every match and junior Peyton Dunkle was leading the second set in her match at No. 2 5-4 when the Antelopes clinched the dual. Dunkle remains 5-0 in dual singles matches this season.
Cal Poly wraps up its trip to Arizona at 11 a.m. Sunday when they face No. 25 Arizona State at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
