SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team heads to Arizona this weekend for a pair of duals.
First up for the Mustangs (4-1) is a battle with Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. PST Saturday at GCU Tennis Facility. Then the team wraps up its trip to the desert at 11 a.m. PST Sunday against No. 25 Arizona State at the Whiteman Tennis Center. Live stats are available for Sunday's match at Arizona State.
Cal Poly is a week removed from a trip to San Jose that saw the Mustangs suffer their first loss of the season to San Jose State 4-3 on Feb. 9 and take down University of San Francisco 6-1 on Feb. 10. The 4-1 start is Cal Poly's best since starting the 2021 season 10-0.
This past week, junior Peyton Dunkle and sophomore Alexandra Ozerets both went undefeated in singles, improving their records on the season to 5-0. Thanks to her record so far this year, Peyton is currently No. 2 all-time in Division I program history in winning percentage in dual singles matches (73.1%) with a 30-11 career mark. Ozerets has only dropped one set during the spring season, winning four matches in straight sets.
Sophomore Kennedy Buntrock is also 4-1 in singles, boasting a perfect 3-0 mark while playing at the No. 4 spot. As a team, Cal Poly is an impressive 23-7 overall in dual singles matches this season.
The Mustangs have captured the doubles point in four out of five matches this season, emerging victorious in all four. Cal Poly's No. 2 doubles pairing made up of graduate student Melissa LaMette and junior Romane Mosse has still yet to be beaten (4-0). Peyton and her older sister Delanie Dunkle are 3-1 at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Grand Canyon (7-1) carries a four-match winning streak into Saturday's dual with the Mustangs. The Antelopes have played all their matches so far this season at home, defeating UC Davis and UC San Diego 7-0, Fresno State, Arkansas, Idaho and UC Riverside 4-0, and Missouri 5-2. GCU's lone defeat came to Arizona 4-0 on Jan. 16. Last year, Cal Poly beat the Antelopes 4-1 at Arizona's LaNelle Robson Tennis Center to open the 2023 spring season.
Last year, Grand Canyon won the Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship as the No. 4 seed to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to No. 9 Pepperdine in the first round.
Arizona State has been ranked in the ITA poll since the start of the season and is 5-2 on the year. The Sun Devils two losses both came against ranked opponents, falling 4-0 to No. 13 Ohio State during the ITA Kickoff Weekend and dropping a 4-1 decision at No. 20 San Diego on Feb. 4. Sunday's dual will mark the fourth all-time meeting between Cal Poly and ASU.
The Sun Devils boast two ranked singles players — No. 77 Giulia Morlet and No. 97 Emilija Tverijonaite. Last year, ASU went 17-7 and lost to No. 30 Wake Forest 4-3 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, finishing the season ranked No. 26 in the nation.
Cal Poly continues its six-match road swing next weekend in Fresno when the Mustangs face BYU on Feb. 24 and Fresno State on Feb. 25.
