Cal Poly Edged in 2024 Finale at Omaha, 86-82
12/21/2024 8:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball
OMAHA – Guard Jarred Hyder (above) finished with a team high 22 points and fellow graduate standout Owen Koonce added 20 for the Cal Poly men's basketball program, but the Mustangs closed the 2024 calendar year Saturday evening with an 86-82 setback against Omaha inside Baxter Arena.
Freshman guard Peter Bandelj added 10 points for Cal Poly (6-8), which trailed Omaha (5-9) by five at the break and cut its second-half deficit to a single possession six times before a Koonce three-pointer handed the Mustangs a 65-62 lead with nine-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Cal Poly, however, could only extend its advantage as far as four points with a three-pointer from Omaha guard Tony Osburn providing the Mavericks the lead for certain at 77-74 with four-and-a-half minutes to play.
Senior guard Isaac Jessup added nine points and a team best seven rebounds for the Mustangs, who shot 94.7 (18-for-19) percent from the free throw line Saturday – the third highest mark in program history.
Following a 12-day break, Cal Poly resumes Big West action and opens the new year on Thursday, Jan. 2 when hosting UC Irvine. Tip time on ESPN+ from Mott Athletics Center is 5 p.m.
The Mustangs sank three of their initial four three-point attempts Saturday to go up 9-5 after just 102 seconds before Omaha hit back with a 22-10 run to take a 27-19 lead following a three-pointer from forward Kamryn Thomas midway through the opening half.
Still trailing 34-26 with five minutes remaining, Cal Poly kept the Mavericks to just three field goals the remainder of the half before taking a 43-38 deficit into the break.
