Mustangs Outdistanced in Overtime by UC Irvine, 98-89
1/2/2025 8:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior forward Aaron Price, Jr., (above) led five Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with a career best 16 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after sending Thursday's matchup with UC Irvine to overtime following senior guard Isaac Jessup's three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in regulation – fell to the Anteaters inside Mott Athletics Center, 98-89.
Graduate guard Jarred Hyder added 15 points for Cal Poly (6-9, 0-3), which trailed UC Irvine (12-2, 2-0), 80-77, with 10 seconds to play before Jessup drained his third three-pointer in the final six minutes of regulation. UC Irvine guard Myles Che then missed a potential buzzer-beating jumper.
With Cal Poly playing its third overtime matchup in the last four outings, however, UC Irvine knocked down four of its opening six attempts from the floor in the extra period and all 10 opportunities from the free throw line.
Guard Owen Koonce finished with 13 points for the Mustangs while fellow graduate Ethan Menzies added a Cal Poly best 12. Jessup, scoreless through the opening 34 minutes, recorded 11 points with his initial two three-pointers drawing the Mustangs level at 73-73 with four-and-a-half minutes to play.
A Menzies jumper two minutes later placed the Mustangs in front for the first time since Thursday's opening minute, but two late Cal Poly turnovers allowed UC Irvine to regain the lead after center Bent Leuchten completed a three-point play and Che knocked down two free throws for the 80-77 edge.
Price, Jr., finished with a career high eight rebounds while Hyder matched a collegiate best with seven assists as the Mustangs kept UC Irvine to a 21.1 (4-for-19) percent three-point mark.
Cal Poly resumes action Saturday, Jan. 4, visiting Hawai'i on ESPN+ at 9 p.m. PT (7 p.m. HT).
