Mustangs Sustain 68-55 Saturday Setback at Hawai’i

HONOLULU – Graduate guard Owen Koonce finished with a team leading 15 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program trailed Hawai'i from the onset Saturday evening and sustained a 68-55 setback against the Rainbow Warriors inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
Guards Isaac Jessup and Peter Bandelj added eight points apiece for Cal Poly (6-10, 0-4), which trailed Hawai'i (9-5, 1-2) by just five points at the break before the Rainbow Warriors shot 50.0 (13-for-26) percent during the second half and sank 12 of 13 free throw attempts to pull away. Committing a season low seven turnovers, Cal Poly was limited to a 33.8 (22-for-65) percent field goal mark.
Cal Poly resumes action when visiting UC San Diego on Thursday, Jan. 9. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Holding Hawai'i to a 3-for-13 shooting start Saturday, Cal Poly battled to an early 9-9 stalemate midway through the opening half. The Mustangs themselves were kept to a 25.0 (8-for-32) percent first-half shooting mark, however, and trailed entering the break, 27-22.
Hawai'i though opened the second half by sinking its first seven attempts and, with a 15-2 run, solidified Saturday's first double-digit advantage.
Facing a 49-30 deficit with 13 minutes remaining, Cal Poly – backed by successive Koonce three-pointers – mounted an 8-0 run to cut the gap to 11. Hawai'i, however, scored the next six to keep Cal Poly at a distance.
