Mustangs Fall to Northern Arizona Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly's offense racked up 345 yards of total offense, including 285 in the air, but the Mustangs (2-7, 1-5 Big Sky) dropped its contest at home Saturday to Northern Arizona, 31-14.
Cal Poly sophomore quarterback Jackson Akins threw for 281 yards in his first Division I start. Akins was 32-41 on the night with a touchdown and two interceptions. Senior wide receiver Giancarlo Woods recorded his fourth career 100-yard receiving game, leading the Mustangs with eight catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, redshirt sophomore safety Mason Rivera led Cal Poly for the second straight game. He tied for the team lead with eight tackles and had two pass breakups. Redshirt senior linebacker Judaea Moon also had eight tackles.
The Lumberjacks (6-4, 4-2 Big Sky) accumulated 477 yards of offense, including 293 on the ground. NAU running back Seth Cromwell led them with 132 yards and three touchdowns.
Cal Poly marched 72 yards down the field on the opening drive of the game down to the NAU four yard line but were stopped on fourth and short which gave the ball to the Lumberjacks.
After forcing a punt to get the ball back, Mustang quarterback Jackson Akins was intercepted by NAU's Zach Lewis that gave the Lumberjacks the ball at Cal Poly's 17-yard line. Two plays later, the Lumberjacks ran it in from three yards out for the touchdown to make it 7-0 in the first quarter. Later in the first, NAU went ahead 14-0 after a 38-yard pass play set up a 27-yard rushing touchdown by the Lumberjacks as they went 65 yards in two plays.
With just under nine minutes left in the second quarter, NAU scored to make it 21-0 after going 99 yards in six plays, capped off by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ty Pennington to Tay Lanier.
The Mustangs got on the board with just over five minutes left in the first half after going 85 yards down the field in 10 plays for the touchdown. Akins connected with Giancarlo Woods for a 23-yard touchdown pass in the end zone that Woods fought with two NAU defenders for.
After getting a field goal later in the second, NAU led 24-7 at halftime.
With a minute left in the third, Cal Poly cut the deficit down to 24-14 after Zion Hall ran it in from four yards out to cap a 12-play, 85-yard drive. It was Hall's first career touchdown.
