Mustangs Take USF Down to Wire before Falling in Season Opener
11/5/2024 9:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO – Graduate guard Jarred Hyder (above) led four Cal Poly men's basketball players in double-digit scoring figures with 19 points in Tuesday evening's season opener at San Francisco, but the Mustangs – after tying the matchup 64-64 with seven minutes remaining – sustained an 86-78 setback inside War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Graduate student Owen Koonce finished with 18 points and fellow guard Kieran Elliott added 13 in their first appearances for the Mustangs as Cal Poly – in first-year head coach Mike DeGeorge's debut – enjoyed a steal by junior guard Luka Tarlac and a bucket from senior guard Isaac Jessup to cut a late deficit to 82-78 with 27 seconds to play.
The Mustangs knocked down 12 three-pointers Tuesday, but missed their next two attempts to draw closer as San Francisco sank four successive free throw attempts to close out the matchup.
Cal Poly's 93.3 (14-for-15) free throw mark was its fourth best figure at the Division I level while the Mustangs outrebounded San Francisco, 36-34.
San Francisco, selected for last year's NIT and picked fourth in this season's WCC preseason poll behind No. 6 Gonzaga, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara, was limited to a 25.0 (7-for-28) percent three-point mark.
Cal Poly completes its season-opening, two-game road trip on Thursday, Nov. 7 at California. Tip time on ACCNX and ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Starting Tuesday's matchup 6-for-9 from the floor, Cal Poly opened up a 17-11 lead after five minutes. San Francisco, however, kept Cal Poly to just a pair of Koonce field goals during an ensuing eight-minute span and, with a 20-4 run, assumed a 31-21 advantage.
The Mustangs still faced a 35-26 disadvantage with five-and-a-half minutes to go before the break when Koonce knocked down two free throws before sinking one of Cal Poly six first-half three-pointers. Hyder added another pair of free throws with two minutes left to cut the gap to two before Cal Poly took a 39-35 deficit into the locker room.
San Francisco scored on its first three possessions of the second half and still led 51-42 with 15 minutes to go before Jessup, Hyder and Koonce (twice) connected on three-pointers to hand Cal Poly a 57-54 lead with 10 minutes left.
