Mustangs Outdistanced Thursday at California
11/7/2024 9:23:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BERKELEY – Senior guard Isaac Jessup (above) finished with a team leading 20 points after sinking five three-pointers, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after trailing by four at the break Thursday evening against California – sustained a 12-0 run from the Golden Bears out of halftime and a 91-73 setback inside Haas Pavilion.
Graduate guard Owen Koonce added 11 points for Cal Poly (0-2), which rallied down the first-half stretch to trail 39-35 at halftime before California (2-0) shot 57.6 (19-for-33) percent from the floor in the second half to pull away.
Sophomore guard Kieran Elliott topped Cal Poly with six rebounds as the Mustangs shot 82.6 (19-for-23) percent from the free throw line.
Cal Poly returns to Mott Athletics Center to open its 14-game home slate by welcoming NAIA Menlo College on Sunday, Nov. 10. Tip time on ESPN+ is 6 p.m.
Behind two three-pointers from Jessup and another from senior forward Ethan Menzies, Cal Poly fired out to an 11-2 lead after three minutes. With the Mustangs beginning the matchup 5-for-8 from the three-point line, Cal Poly stretched its early lead as far as 17-5.
The Mustangs though were limited to just two field goals and a free throw by freshman guard Peter Bandelj during an ensuing six-minute window as California cut its deficit to 22-20. A three-pointer from Golden Bears forward Rytis Petraitis two-and-a-half minutes later handed the hosts their first lead of the evening at 25-24 and California stretched its newfound advantage to as far as nine points late in the first half.
Guard Logan McLaughlin, however, sank a three-pointer – his first bucket as a Mustang after redshirting last season – to help Cal Poly bridge the gap as the Mustangs knocked down six of seven free throws down the stretch to trail at the break, 39-35.
California though struck with its 12-0 run out of halftime, maintaining a double-digit advantage the remainder of the evening.
