SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly will host Northern Arizona Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field as the two programs meet for the 16th time in program history.
The Lumberjacks are receiving votes in this week’s national rankings after having won their last two games, two weeks ago over Idaho State and last week over Weber State. They are 5-4 overall and 3-2 in Big Sky play.
As a team, NAU leads the Big Sky in defending against the pass and are second in the conference in total defense.
Last season, the Lumberjacks finished fourth in the Big Sky standings with a 5-3 record in conference play and a 5-6 overall record. They have a fairly new team this year, returning four starters on offense and three on defense while adding 65 newcomers.
They are led by first year head coach Brian Wright, who came to NAU after four seasons at Pittsburg State where he went 38-8.
NAU leads the all-time series 13-2 with the Lumberjacks winning the last meeting in 2022 31-29 in Flagstaff. Cal Poly's two wins against the Lumberjacks both were in Flagstaff, including a 42-34 triumph for a share of the Big Sky title in 2012, the Mustangs' first year in the conference. The Mustangs also won 38-28 in 2018.
Kickoff between the Mustangs and Lumberjacks is set for 5 p.m. from Mustang Memorial Field.
