Mustangs Fall at Home to No. 8 Montana
11/2/2024 7:42:00 PM | Football
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – In its first of three straight home games, Cal Poly football was tight with No. 8 Montana into the second half, but the Mustangs fell to the Grizz (7-2, 4-1 Big Sky) Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field, 42-7.
With the stands filled with over 10,000 fans, the Mustang (2-6, 1-4 Big Sky) offense got the ball into Montana territory five times but were only able to come out with points once, coming up just short on three fourth down attempts.
Cal Poly redshirt sophomore safety Mason Rivera had a big day on defense. He led the team in tackles for the game with 10 with three tackles for loss. He also had an interception and forced a fumble. He and the rest of Cal Poly's defense held tough to keep the Mustangs close with Montana at the half, 14-0.
Midway through the third quarter, Montana punt returner Junior Bergen made a few Mustangs miss and returned it 84 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0. Later in the quarter following an interception by the Grizzlies that gave their offense the ball at Cal Poly's 17-yard line, they ran in a touchdown a few plays later to push the Montana lead to 28-0.
Montana made it 35-0 in the fourth following a seven-play, 48-yard drive that was finished off by a seven-yard touchdown run.
Cal Poly quarterback Richie Watts guided the Mustangs 76 yards down the field later in the fourth. He capped that drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jake Woods to get the Mustangs on the board.
The Mustangs will host Northern Arizona next Saturday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. at Mustang Memorial Field. During halftime of the game, Cal Poly will honor its seven newest inductees into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame.
