Mustangs Win Third Straight, Edging Eastern Washington, 82-78

CHENEY, Wash. – Graduate guard Owen Koonce led five Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with a team leading 19 points Sunday evening as the Cal Poly men's basketball program extended its winning run to three straight with an 82-78 victory against Eastern Washington at Reese Court.
Graduate guard Mac Riniker finished with 15 points and freshman Peter Bandelj (center, top) followed with 13 for Cal Poly (3-2), which shot 51.6 (33-for-64) percent from the floor while leading Eastern Washington (1-3) by one at the break and by as much as 22 during the second half.
Guards Isaac Jessup and Kieran Elliott added 10 points apiece for the Mustangs, who knocked down 11 three-pointers.
Opening a three-game road trip Sunday with its first victory against Eastern Washington in 23 seasons, Cal Poly resumes action at Arizona State on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Tip time on ESPN+ is 6 p.m.
Trailing 11-2 early, Cal Poly responded to an initial Sunday deficit by keeping Eastern Washington to just a solitary field goal during an ensuing seven-minute span with back-to-back three-pointers from graduate guard Jarred Hyder and Jessup providing the Mustangs an 24-18 lead seven-and-a-half minutes before the break.
Cal Poly led by as much as 31-24 with three-and-a-half minutes to play before Eastern Washington overtook the Mustangs with an 11-2 run. Hyder, however, knocked down a buzzer-beating three-pointer to close the half and hand Cal Poly a 36-35 edge at the break.
Cal Poly then received three-pointers from Koonce and Jessup to open the second half before junior guard Luka Tarlac continued with a layup to place the Mustangs up, 44-35. Koonce then added successive layups two minutes later to provide Cal Poly its first double-digit lead of the night.
