Hyder with Career Night; Mustangs Come Up just Short at Arizona State
11/20/2024 8:48:00 PM | Men's Basketball
TEMPE, Ariz. – Graduate guard Jarred Hyder (above) sank a collegiate best seven three-pointers to finish with a career high 27 points Wednesday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after trailing by as much as 13 points early in the second half and cutting the deficit to one three times in the final six minutes – fell at Arizona State, 93-89.
Senior guard Isaac Jessup finished with 17 points on four three-pointers while sophomore guard Kieran Elliott added 14 on a 6-for-7 shooting night for Cal Poly (3-3), which faced an 89-84 deficit with 21 seconds remaining before Hyder knocked down his seventh three-pointer to cut the gap to two. With Cal Poly forced to foul to regain possession, Sun Devils guard Joson Sanon sank both free throws before fellow guard BJ Freeman fouled Hyder attempting his 13th three-pointer of the night.
Hyder, however, connected on just two of three free throw attempts while Freeman sank both of his opportunities to finalize the host's 93-89 win.
Pursuing its first victory against a Power 4/5 program since a 70-68 victory at then-No. 11 UCLA (Nov. 25, 2012), Cal Poly – which never led Wednesday – shot 51.6 (33-for-64) percent from the floor, connected on 13 three-pointers and, three nights after turning the ball over 22 times in a road victory at Eastern Washington, committed just 12.
Hyder's 27-point performance outmatched his previous career best of 26, set while a freshman at Fresno State on Nov. 10, 2019. His seven three-pointers were one shy of the Cal Poly program single-game record, previously accomplished by three players and most recently by Dawin Whiten on Feb. 10, 2007.
Cal Poly completes its current three-game road trip at Saint Mary's on Saturday, Nov. 23. Tip time from University Credit Union Pavilion is 5 p.m.
