SAN LUIS OBISPO – With an opportunity to sweep its opening home stand of the season, the Cal Poly men’s basketball program completes a two-game stretch inside Mott Athletics Center when hosting Seattle – for the first time in 15 years – on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs then close the week at Eastern Washington on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 4 p.m. Both matchups stream on ESPN+ for Cal Poly (1-2), which earned its first win of the season with a 99-66 home decision against Division II Menlo College (Nov. 10). Sunday’s matchup at Eastern Washington – Cal Poly’s first visit to Reese Court since Dec. 23, 2005 – opens the program’s lengthiest road trip of the year with away dates following at Arizona State (Nov. 20) and Saint Mary’s (Nov. 23). Seattle (0-2), which captured last year’s College Basketball Insider postseason tournament title, dropped a 93-86 season opener at Eastern Washington (Nov. 6) before being edged at home by Liberty, 66-64 (Nov. 9). Eastern Washington (1-2), meanwhile, enjoys a six-day break before hosting Cal Poly following an 84-77 defeat at Missouri (Nov. 11).
CAL POLY VERSUS SEATTLE: The Mustangs last faced Seattle on Nov. 14, 2010 with Cal Poly delivering a 76-60 road victory inside Key Arena. The Redhawks previously visited Cal Poly on Dec. 14, 2008 and Dec. 3, 2009, prevailing in the former (60-59) and falling in the latter (85-74).
CAL POLY VERSUS EASTERN WASHINGTON: The Mustangs and Eagles met eight times between the 1994-95 and 2005-06 seasons, but not again until Eastern Washington produced a 62-53 victory at Cal Poly last December. Dating to the first meeting between the two programs on Dec. 15, 1954, Eastern Washington leads the all-time series, 6-4. Cal Poly’s last series win was a 75-70 road decision on Dec. 9, 2001.
DEGEORGE TAKES THE MUSTANG REINS: Named Cal Poly’s sixth head coach at the Division I level on March 26, Mike DeGeorge arrived in San Luis Obispo from Division II Colorado Mesa after directing the Mavericks to 141 wins in six seasons, three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances – including Sweet 16 trips in 2022 and 2024. Bringing more than two decades of head coaching experience to Cal Poly, DeGeorge’s squads at Colorado Mesa were known for their offensive prowess. During the 2023-24 season, Colorado Mesa led Division II in effective field goal percentage (.596), finished third in three-pointers per game (11.4) and 15th in points per game (11.4). Both of DeGeorge’s assistant coaches from Colorado Mesa – Kyle Bossier and BJ Andrews – joined Cal Poly in the offseason, as well as four transfers from Colorado Mesa.
LOOKING AHEAD: Cal Poly’s lengthiest road trip of the season concludes when the Mustangs visit Arizona State (Wednesday, Nov. 20) for just the third time in 64 years and Saint Mary’s (Saturday, Nov. 23) for the first time in five seasons. Both matchups will be streamed via ESPN+.
ETC.: Cal Poly is in its 31st Division I season and 81st as a four-year program … Cal Poly’s Nov. 5 matchup at San Francisco marked the earliest opening date to a season in program history … Cal Poly’s 93.3 (14-for-15) percent free throw mark at San Francisco (Nov. 5) marked the fourth highest single game figure in program history … since transitioning to the Division I level prior to the 1994-95 season, Cal Poly is 49-1 against non-Division I programs following a 99-66 home victory against Division II Menlo College (Nov. 10).
