SEATTLE, Wash. — Junior Spencer Pickren became the fourth athlete in program history to run a sub-four-minute mile, the Mustang men defended their title in the 4x400-meter relay and three athletes broke school records to highlight action for Cal Poly track and field during the final day of the UW Invitational on Saturday.
27 athletes competed for Cal Poly on day two of the meet inside Dempsey Indoor, and a number of Mustangs recorded personal bests.
The men captured a pair of event victories Saturday, including claiming the top spot in the men's 4x400 relay at the UW Invitational for the second straight year. Chase Walter, Ben Kin Ho Tsang, MacGregor TeSelle and Joey Souto powered Cal Poly to a win in the event with a time of 3:13.51. Souto anchored the relay and made an incredible move in the final 50 meters to pass Washington and Fresno Pacific and cross the finish line in first. TeSelle also ran a 47-second split on the third leg of the relay.
Junior Corban Payne earned the other victory for the Mustangs on the day, taking first in the men's shot put with a mark of 54 feet, 7.25 inches — shattering his own school record in the process. Payne improved upon his previous indoor personal best in the event by over 2 feet. The Paso Robles, Calif. native established a school record in the event last year when men competed indoors for Cal Poly for the first time in Division I program history.
Pickren joined the sub-four-minute mile club, posting a time of 3:59.38 — the second-fastest mile time in school history. Pickren finished 15th overall in UW's Mile City extravaganza that saw 15 athletes run sub-four miles. He improved upon his previous PR by nearly four seconds.
On the women's side, graduate student Shelby Daniele and sophomore Tatiana Cornejo both had impressive performances. A day after finishing runner-up in the 200-meter, Daniele posted a blistering PR of 7.53 seconds in the 60-meter dash to finish third. She was just .06 seconds shy of Jadyn Snaer's 2023 school record in the event and remains at No. 2 on Cal Poly's all-time list. In the mile, Cornejo grabbed first in her heat with a time of 4:46.10, moving her to No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list. She took 18th overall out of 199 runners.
TeSelle and Souto also broke school records in their respective individual events Sunday. In prelims of the men's 60, TeSelle posted a scorching PR of 6.85 seconds to surpass Tyler Esteves' 2023 program record in the event. His time was the sixth fastest in prelims. Souto ran an all-conditions PR in the men's 400 (48.61 seconds) to break the indoor record in the event and finish seventh overall.
In the women's long jump, juniors Melody Nwagwu (18-11.75) and Maya Holman (18-5.25) secured fifth and seventh respectively. Freshmen Jordan Jackson, Kalia Estes, Ava Fortier and Elianah DeMange helped Cal Poly finish fifth in the women's 4x400 relay.
Sophomore Carson Smith placed eighth in the men's 800 and freshman Chris Caudillo (4:03.42) and redshirt freshman Lewis Westwood (4:05.39) both posted significant PRs in the mile.
During the opening day of the UW Invitational on Friday, sophomore Rory Devaney and Tsang both broke program records. Across the two-day meet, Cal Poly shattered five school records.
The Mustangs return to Dempsey Indoor for the third time this indoor season on Feb. 9-10 to take part in the Husky Classic.
