LIVE RESULTS
SEATTLE, Wash. — Graduate student Shelby Daniele broke her own school record in the women's indoor 200-meter and sophomore Tatiana Cornejo obliterated the program record in the women's indoor 5,000-meter to highlight for Cal Poly track and field during Day 1 of the Husky Classic on Friday inside Dempsey Indoor.
For the second time this indoor season, Daniele flew past her school record in the women's 200, which she first broke during the 2023 indoor season. The Clovis, Calif. native ran a personal best of 24.36 seconds to place second in the event.
Cornejo posted a massive all-around 40-second personal best in the women's 5,000 to surpass the 2023 indoor school record in the event by nearly 22 seconds. Cornejo's time of 16:01.47 was the fastest by a Mustang indoors or outdoors since 2017 when Peyton Bilo recorded the second fastest outdoor 5,000 time in school history (15:52.01). Bilo went on to finish 10th at the NCAA Championships that season to earn Second Team All-American honors.
Junior Maya Holman jumped to No. 3 all-time in program history in the women's 60-meter hurdles, posting a PR of 8.69 seconds in prelims. She finished fourth in the final.
Junior Melody Nwagwu recorded an indoor PR in the women's long jump of 39 feet, 10.75 inches to place fourth, while Chase Kubinski, Melanie Castelli and Lariel Henley all cleared 5-3 to earn third, fourth and fifth respectively in the women's high jump. The mark was a new indoor PR for Kubinski and matched Castelli's indoor PR.
On the men's side, freshman Ben Kin Ho Tsang broke his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles (8.31 seconds) to capture fourth while sophomore Rory Devaney earned second in the shot put with a mark of 63-1, 4 inches off his own program record. Junior Spencer Pickren also ran a time of 8:07.93 in the 3,000-meter, No. 3 in school history.
