Mustangs Come Up Short at Buzzer to Cal State Fullerton, 54-51
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Guard Kobe Sanders finished with a game high 14 points Thursday evening, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – after trailing Cal State Fullerton by 11 points with six minutes to play – twice saw potential game-tying three-pointers from the guard fall short in the final seconds as the Mustangs dropped a 54-51 decision to the Titans inside Mott Athletics Center.
Sophomore forward Aaron Price, Jr. added 10 points and six rebounds for Cal Poly (4-16, 0-8), which trailed Cal State Fullerton (10-10, 3-5), 48-37, with six minutes remaining. Freshman guard Justin Page and Sanders knocked down successive three-pointers a minute later to help draw Cal Poly closer before a layup from graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola with two minutes left cut the deficit to 52-49.
Sanders produced the 54-51 scoreline after sinking two free throws with 66 seconds to play, but missed a potential game-tying three-point attempt with seven seconds on the clock. With Cal Poly forced to foul, Titans guard Tory San Antonio missed both free throws before Sanders fell short at the other end.
Jaakkola – who finished with 11 points and a team leading eight rebounds – made his 125th career appearance for Cal Poly Thursday, matching forward Brian Bennett (2012-16) and guard Maliik Love (2010-15) for second place in program history.
Cal Poly resumes action when visiting Hawai'i on Saturday, Jan. 27. Tip time on ESPN+ is 9 p.m. PT (7 p.m. HT).
Cal Poly survived four lead changes inside the opening seven minutes Thursday, producing a 12-0 run that included Price, Jr.'s first career three-pointer to take an 18-7 lead midway through the opening half.
The Titans, however, scored on five of their ensuing six possessions, utilizing a three-pointer from guard Grayson Carper to tie the matchup, 18-18, four-and-a-half minutes before the break. Freshman guard Quentin Jones and Price, Jr. broke Cal State Fullerton's 11-0 run with successive buckets, but the Titans took a 24-22 advantage in the locker room on guard Donovan Oday's buzzer-beating jumper.
Cal State Fullerton then open the second half by keeping Cal Poly to just one field goal during the opening six minutes, stretching its lead to 35-24 with 14 minutes to play.
