Mustangs Fall Saturday at CSU Bakersfield, 65-53

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman guard Quentin Jones (above) paced the Cal Poly men's basketball program with a game high 16 points Saturday evening, but the Mustangs dropped a 65-53 Saturday evening decision to CSU Bakersfield inside the Icardo Center.
Senior guard Kobe Sanders returned to the lineup after a two-game hiatus to finish with 10 points for Cal Poly (4-15, 0-7), which sank the first basket of the night before trailing for the final 38 minutes.
Junior forward Paul Bizimana added nine points and a team leading six rebounds for the Mustangs.
CSU Bakersfield (7-11, 2-5), which turned 16 Cal Poly turnovers into 23 points, became just the seventh Division I program this season to prevail without sinking a three-pointer (the Roadrunners attempted just six).
Cal Poly resumes action on Thursday, Jan. 25, returning home to Mott Athletics Center to host Cal State Fullerton. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Jones opened Saturday's scoring with a three-pointer, but the basket counted as Cal Poly's lone field goal inside the opening five minutes as CSU Bakersfield built an early 11-3 advantage. The Mustangs still trailed 24-17 with five minutes remaining before being held to just a solitary Sanders jumper the remainder of the half as the Roadrunners took a 32-19 lead into the break.
Still facing a 40-22 deficit early in the second half, Cal Poly utilized a 9-2 run capped by a Bizimana three-pointer to trim CSU Bakersfield's lead to 11 points.
A pair of jumpers from freshman guard Justin Page helped Cal Poly claw to another 11-point deficit with 12 minutes to play, but that was as close as the Mustangs came to the Roadrunners down the stretch.
