SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's tennis opens its 2024 spring campaign this Friday through Sunday at the Cal Winter Invite.
Matches at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley start at 10 a.m. each day. The Mustangs are set to battle some stiff competition as they will encounter players from No. 19 Cal, No. 22 USC, Saint Mary's and San Francisco in singles and doubles action.
A livestream is available to watch matches played on the Hellman Tennis Complex courts throughout the tournament.
Last year, Cal Poly was slated to compete in the Cal Winter Invite before it was rained out.
The Mustangs are fresh off another strong fall season which saw Peyton Dunkle and Delanie Dunkle make it to the quarterfinals in doubles play at the ITA Northwest Regionals, and Eliza Bates and Romane Mosse capture the White bracket doubles title at the Cal Fall Invite.
This spring, Cal Poly is seeking its fourth straight trip to the Big West Championship match. During the 2023 season, the Mustangs shredded the school record books once again, recording 14 wins for the third straight season (14-11) — a first in Division I program history. The team also made its first postseason appearance in 12 years, playing in the inaugural Universal Tennis NIT Championship and securing its first match point in postseason play in Division I program history in a quarterfinal loss to No. 62 Colorado.
Seven of the nine players on that team are back this spring — fifth-year Delanie Dunkle, graduate student Melissa LaMette, juniors Eliza Bates and Peyton Dunkle, and sophomores Kennedy Buntrock, Sarah MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets. Delanie (Second Team doubles), Peyton (Second Team doubles, Honorable Mention singles), Buntrock (Second Team doubles) and Ozerets (Freshman of the Year, Honorable Mention singles) all received All-Big West honors a year ago.
Junior Romane Mosse (a transfer from Jacksonville State), sophomore Amy Leather (a transfer from Tulsa) and freshman Natalie Lynch are the Mustangs' three newcomers this season.
After the Cal Winter Invite, Cal Poly opens its dual season on Jan. 20-21 when the team travels to Spokane to face Montana and Gonzaga.
