Cal Poly Outdistanced Thursday at UC Riverside, 71-56

RIVERSIDE – Graduate forward Tuukka Jaakkola finished with a season best 15 points for the Cal Poly men's basketball program Thursday evening, but the Mustangs sustained a 71-56 setback to UC Riverside inside the SRC Arena.
Junior guard Aidan Prukop matched a career high with nine points for Cal Poly (4-13, 0-5), which utilized an early second-half run to cut UC Riverside's nine-point halftime deficit to three with 16-and-a-half minutes to play. The Highlanders (7-10, 2-3), however, countered with a 14-2 run to keep Cal Poly at a distance the remainder of the evening.
Freshman guard Quentin Jones also finished with nine points and a team leading six rebounds for Cal Poly, which committed just 11 turnovers, but was outrebounded, 44-28.
Cal Poly returns home to resume action on Saturday, Jan. 13, hosting UC San Diego at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
Jones supplied Thursday's opening bucket with a three-pointer 22 seconds into action, but the Mustangs found themselves trailing 16-7 after six minutes.
Still facing a 24-17 disadvantage with eight minutes remaining in the first half, Cal Poly received successive jumpers from junior guard Isaac Spears and Jones to cut the deficit to three points. UC Riverside, however, sank the next two buckets to keep the Mustangs at bay and take a 32-23 advantage into the break.
Cal Poly opened the second half with a 10-4 run capped by Prukop's second three-pointer of the evening that cut UC Riverside's lead to 36-33 at the 16-and-a-half minute mark.
The Highlanders, however, recovered to limit Cal Poly to just a solitary field goal during the ensuing six minutes, stretching the lead to 52-37. Cal Poly failed to move within single digits of the lead the remainder of the night.
