1/13/2024 10:03:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior guard Hayden Jory (above) set new career highs with 12 points and five rebounds in his first collegiate start, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program dropped an 86-61 decision to UC San Diego Saturday evening inside Mott Athletics Center.
Freshman guard Quentin Jones also finished with a team leading 12 points for Cal Poly (4-14, 0-6), which never led against UC San Diego (11-6, 5-0) – one of the Big West's two remaining undefeated programs. The Tritons, who shot 51.8 (29-for-56) percent from the floor, committed just five turnovers.
Junior guard Aidan Prukop produced his second successive nine-point night for Cal Poly.
Following a week break, Cal Poly resumes action at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Jan. 20. Tip time from the Icardo Center on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
Trailing 7-0 after 108 seconds, Cal Poly – behind five early points from Jory – recovered to tie the matchup at 11-11 with 15 minutes to play in the opening half. The Tritons, however, responded with a 10-0 run to establish their first double-digit lead of the night.
Cal Poly closed to a 23-16 deficit after Jory sank his second three-pointer of the evening eight-and-a-half minutes before the break, but UC San Diego scored 12 of the final 14 points of the first half to take a 41-23 advantage in the locker room.
The Mustangs failed to shorten their deficit to less than 18 during the second half.
