CAL POLY VERSUS THE TITANS: Thursday's match will mark the 35th meeting between the Mustangs and Cal State Fullerton, with Cal Poly leading the all-time series 17-11-6. Last year, the two teams played to a scoreless draw in Fullerton.
SCOUTING THE TITANS: Cal State Fullerton is winless in conference play through three matches, suffering a 3-1 defeat at UC Riverside to open Big West play before earning 1-1 draws against Hawai'i and CSUN at home. The Titans, who are unbeaten at home this season (1-0-6), are led by sophomore defender Kaylin Raibon, who has buried four goals this season, including two game-winners — tied for the most in the Big West. Raibon was one of 12 players named to the All-Big West Preseason Coaches Team. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mia Ranson has started in net for the Titans in 11 of their 12 matches, allowing 15 goals and recording 52 saves, a .776 save percentage and a 1.36 goals against average.
CAL POLY VERSUS THE HIGHLANDERS: The Mustangs lead the all-time series 11-5-5 and are unbeaten in their last four matches (3-0-1) against the Highlanders. Last season, Cal Poly earned a 1-0 victory in Riverside thanks to a 53rd-minute goal from McKenna Carbon.
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS: Through two matches, UC Riverside currently sits atop the Big West standings with 6 points (2-0-0). The Highlanders play at UC Santa Barbara (2-4-6, 0-2-1 BW) on Thursday before facing the Mustangs. This is the first time in six years UCR has started 2-0 in Big West play, downing Cal State Fullerton 3-1 on Sept. 17 and Hawai'i 1-0 this past Sunday. The Highlanders are led by junior Daphane Mendez, who has tallied two goals and five assists this season — tied for the most in the conference. In net, senior Cassia Souza has started every match for UCR, allowing 19 goals and recording 63 saves, a .768 save percentage and a 1.73 goals against average while posting three shutouts.
BIG WEST TABLE: With 3 points, Cal Poly currently sits in fourth place in the conference standings. The Mustangs are one of only two teams in the conference that have played just one Big West match so far — UC San Diego being the other. Cal Poly defeated Blue-Green rival UCSB 3-1 in Santa Barbara on Sept. 14 in its Big West opener.
CONFERENCE STREAKIN': Dating back to last season, the Mustangs are undefeated (6-0-2) over their last eight Big West regular season matches. It's Cal Poly longest unbeaten streak in conference play since posting a 9-0-3 record over 12 matches across the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
THE RIGHT MIX: The Mustangs return 15 letterwinners and four All-Big West honorees from their 2022 squad that secured the program's first outright Big West regular season title in nine years and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, but also have 15 newcomers this fall — 12 freshmen and three transfers.
DON'T MESS WITH THE BACKLINE: Sophomore Camryn Penn and juniors Emma Brown and Aynsley Conner make up an experienced-laden backline for the Mustangs. Between the three of them, the trio boasts 103 career appearances and 96 starts. Brown, a 2022 All-Big West First Team selection, was named to the All-Big West Preseason Coaches Team and has played every minute in 39 of the 48 matches she has appeared in. Conner has started in 26 of the 28 matches she has appeared in, while Penn has recorded 25 starts over 27 appearances.
FIRST APPEARANCES: Nine Mustangs have made their first collegiate appearance this fall — redshirt freshman Sophia Minnite, and freshmen Bailey Bracha, Jaycee DeFazio, Sophia Moness, Kasia Wolf, Siena Urzua, Anna Babinski, Tacey Bivin and Annika Smith.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: Nine players have scored this season and 14 have recorded a point.
FUN FACTS: The Mustangs are currently ranked 25th in Division I in average home attendance and have had the 36th-toughest schedule in the country so far this season.
UP NEXT: Cal Poly travels to Long Beach State on Thursday, Oct. 5, and UC Irvine on Sunday, Oct. 8.
