SAN LUIS OBISPO – With the Cal Poly football program's defense turning in another set of noteworthy performances, the Mustangs – eight days out from their Sept. 2 season opener against San Diego – completed preseason camp Friday afternoon with a third and final scrimmage at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
"I'm happy with where our defense is today. From the front end to the back, we've got a number of guys who can provide opportunities for depth," first-year head coach Paul Wulff said. "We're still youthful, but there's definitely talent there. Offensively, our veteran receivers and quarterbacks have gotten in sync these last three practices. We've still got work to do, but there's been growth."
The first half of Friday's scrimmage was reserved for the intended travel roster with the second portion affording Cal Poly's staff the chance to utilize the depth chart.
Offensively, Cal Poly employed all six quarterbacks who, during Friday's schedule of set plays, two-minute drills and 10-minute periods, collectively completed passes to 10 different receivers. Freshman wide receiver Tyrece Fairly-Diyem enjoyed a pair of touchdown receptions while sophomore wide receivers Michael Briscoe and Dalton Bailey hauled in one apiece.
Freshman wide receiver Eddy Schultz led with four catches while freshman running back Kendric Sanders (above) paced the Mustangs with eight carries.
"After last week's scrimmage, I thought the offense made some strides," Wulff said. "This will be a process. There's game No. 1 and, once we're done, we'll evaluate and start working on what we need to improve. A lot of times, you don't get answers until you play games. We're ready, we'll get some answers and figure what we need to do from there."
Cal Poly's highlight defensive play belong to freshman corner back Kresean Kizzy, who returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown. Freshman safety DeMel Turner produced another interception while junior defensive end Robbie Greer, freshman linebacker Kenny Olson and freshman defensive lineman Su'e Luamanu all came up with sacks.
The Mustangs now enjoy two off days before resuming preparation Monday morning for the Saturday, Sept. 2 season opener with San Diego. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is 3:02 p.m.
