Mustangs Nearly Secure Draw at No. 1 UCLA
8/24/2023 11:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer team wasn't intimidated at all by the No. 1 ranked team in the nation Thursday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
The Mustangs (0-1-1) went toe-to-toe with the defending national champion UCLA Bruins for a full 90 minutes and nearly took home a 1-1 draw, but a penalty kick goal by Sunshine Fontes with 1:22 left allowed UCLA to escape with a 2-1 win.
"We played one of the toughest teams in the country tonight and the effort was fantastic," head coach Alex Crozier said.
A goal from Ally Cook allowed UCLA to carry a 1-0 lead into halftime, but in the second half the Mustangs came out more aggressive and nearly found the back of the net less than a minute in.
Freshman Bailey Bracha attacked up the right side just over 40 seconds into the final half and played a perfect cross into the box that sophomore Jessie Halladay steered just over the top of the crossbar.
Halladay earned a free kick just outside the box less than two minutes and registered Cal Poly's first shot on goal.
The pressure on the UCLA backline was mounting and in the 53rd minute the Mustangs capitalized on a mistake. A Bruin defender misplayed a ball back to the keeper and senior Kate Reedy stole it, got behind the UCLA keeper and buried a shot into a wide-open net.
The incredible effort from Reedy leveled the match at 1-1.
However, just three minutes after the goal, Bracha received her second yellow card of the night, forcing the Mustangs to play the rest of the match with only 10 players. But Cal Poly didn't back down and seemed to be unfazed by playing a woman down.
Less than three minutes after the sendoff, sophomore Brennan Cole fired a shot on net from outside the box that was turned away by the UCLA goalkeeper. Then the Mustangs buckled down and played fantastic team defense for over 30 minutes to keep the match at 1-1.
Junior Mackenzie Samuel — the defending Big West Goalkeeper of the Year — was everywhere, making four clutch saves down the stretch, while Cal Poly defenders (Emma Brown, Siena Urzua, Camryn Penn, Annie Larson, Cole and a host of others) fended off some of the best offensive players in the country.
Then in the 89th minute UCLA was awarded a penalty and the Bruins converted it to secure the 2-1 win.
Despite the defeat, the Mustangs fought valiantly and nearly earned a draw on the road against the 2022 national champions. Thursday's match marked the fifth time in program history Cal Poly squared off against the No. 1 team in the nation.
Reedy's goal was the fifth of her career and first since Oct. 10, 2021, against CSUN. Samuel finished with eight saves as UCLA outshot the Mustangs 23-4.
Freshman Annika Smith also made her first career appearance and start for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly heads to Loyola Marymount (1-2-0) at noon Sunday to continue its four-match road trip to open the season. You can watch the match live on ESPN+.
