Mustangs Tame Lions to Secure First Victory
8/27/2023 4:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Sophomore Jessie Halladay (pictured above) tallied a goal and an assist and junior Emily Nedom buried her first collegiate goal as Cal Poly women's soccer secured its first victory of the season Sunday, silencing Loyola Marymount 2-0.
Halladay, who transferred to Cal Poly from LMU this spring, had quite the return to Sullivan Field, leading the Mustangs' attack throughout the match.
"I'm super proud of the team for hanging in there and playing our style," Halladay said after the match. "I think all the goals and assists that happened today were a combination of everyone working hard and working together."
The Mustangs (1-1-1) were the aggressor early, allowing them to get on the board in the eighth minute. Halladay received the ball just outside the box and fed a perfect pass to Emily Nedom inside. The junior forward did the rest, sliding a shot with her left foot to the back of the LMU net to secure her first collegiate goal and point. It was also Halladay's first collegiate assist.
In the 21st minute, sophomore defender Camryn Penn got a clean look at net from outside the 18-yard box and fired a shot to the bottom right post that was secured by the LMU goalkeeper.
Scoring opportunities were hard to come by the rest of the first half and the Mustangs carried a 1-0 advantage into the break.
The Lions (1-3-0) turned up the pressure in the final 45 minutes, but defending Big West Goalkeeper of the Year Mackenzie Samuel and the Cal Poly backline answered the call. Samuel made a save in the 53rd minute, and then in the 61st minute LMU earned its best scoring chance of the match. LMU's Alex Hobbs drove toward the left post and blasted a shot on net that Samuel turned away. The rebound then came right back to Hobbs, who looked ready to level the match at 1-1 until senior Olivia Ortiz stepped in and blocked her shot attempt to force a corner.
Samuel stood tall between the pipes once again in the 63rd minute, making a difficult save to stifle the Lions' hopes of earning a result.
Nedom nearly buried another goal in the 73rd minute, as her shot from outside the box took a deflection off an LMU defender and rang off the right post.
Halladay sealed the win in the 78th minute. She intercepted a pass played back to the LMU goalkeeper, found her way around the netminder and cashed in her second career goal into a wide-open net.
Samuel made one more save for good measure in the 88th minute to finish with five in the match. For the junior, it was the 14th clean sheet of her career and she is now No. 9 on Cal Poly's all-time career saves list with 105.
Halladay has five points (two goals and one assist) through three games as a Mustang. Junior defender Emma Brown added to her impressive minutes played streak Sunday, not stepping off the pitch for the 10th consecutive match.
Cal Poly will finish off a four-match road trip to open the season at 4 p.m. next Sunday when they travel to Cal (0-2).
