SAN LUIS OBISPO – With the Mustang defense enjoying the highlight role Saturday afternoon, the Cal Poly football program held the second of its three preseason scrimmages at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital.
"We expect our defense to be very good," said first-year head coach Paul Wulff, whose team concluded the third week of camp Saturday. "We have a lot of veteran players there who built some quality depth and they're battling. They're going to have to fight to play. I'm excited to see how this unfolds."
With the Mustangs able to utilize the depth chart, Cal Poly's defense produced several standout plays, including an interception from freshman safety Troy Bean and a late sack from sophomore linebacker Michael Otterstedt. Freshman lineman Pasefika Salatielu also enjoyed a pass breakup midway through the matchup, which featured Cal Poly's offense squaring off against the defense.
Offensively, freshman running back Troy Fletcher employed a 23-yard carry to set up his own two-yard touchdown plunge. Freshman kicker Noah Serna, who converted both of his field goal attempts from 45 and 47 yards, added the point after on Fletcher's touchdown to complete the drive.
"It's been interesting watching our kickers on field goals and extra points," Wulff said. "I've been impressed. Even though it's not live, they're done a really nice job in the last week-and-a-half in getting consistent making kicks. That's something that was a priority coming into this year."
Eight different Mustang receivers caught passes as all six of Cal Poly's quarterbacks featured Saturday. Freshman running back Kendric Sanders – who co-led the Mustangs with three receptions alongside freshman wide receiver Makhi Johnson – also paced Cal Poly with eight carries for yardage.
Cal Poly's final week of fall practice resumes on Monday, Aug. 21 with camp concluding on Friday, Aug. 25 with its final scrimmage taking place at 2 p.m. that day. The Mustangs open the 2023 season when hosting San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 2. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is 3 p.m.
