SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's defense shined brightest during the Mustangs' first scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field as the team wrapped up its second week of fall training camp.Paul Wulff said following Saturday's scrimmage. "Our defense just outexecuted the offense today at a lot higher clip."
Redshirt freshman defensive back Kai Rapolla and redshirt sophomore defensive back Jamauri Jackson both came away with interceptions during the scrimmage. Jackson also picked up a sack.
The offense was able to get some rhythm going during the scrimmage, which included senior wide receiver Bryson Allen and redshirt sophomore wide receiver Michael Briscoe catching touchdowns and freshman running back Aidan Ramos running for a touchdown from down near the goal line.
The scrimmage also gave the coaching staff an opportunity to see some of the newcomers get some reps during live action. They also worked on red zone scenarios and two-minute drives.
"It was really good to see some guys in the live action we've never seen before on both sides of the ball and that's really helpful for us for what our next steps are this next week in practice," Wulff said.
The team is off Sunday before getting back going Monday. There will be another scrimmage set to take place Saturday, August 19 at 4 p.m. at Mustang Memorial Field.
"We're in a good spot after a week and a half of practice but the most important thing is what we can get accomplished next week," Wulff added. "I think it's a huge week for growth when you're a little tired and you're rolling into your second week of camp so a lot of work to be done but we're in a good position to get that done."
"At times I was really happy with the defensive tackling considering it was the first time going live so there was some really good things from a tackling perspective," first year head coach
