SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Wide receiver Michael Roth is Cal Poly's Big Sky Conference football scholar-athlete for the 2022 season.
Roth is one of 23 student-athletes honored across the league's 10 full-time membership and three affiliate members. Each school nominated one student-athlete for each sport offered by the conference.
"When I look at this list, I'm blown away by the amount of success these student-athletes have had, not only in their athletic careers, but in the classroom as well," Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill said. "This group is filled with Big Sky champions and All-Americans alike, with each and every member meaning so much to their respective intuition for the entirety of their career.
"I hope these honorees take pride in knowing their administrations held them in such high esteem that they designated them a 2023 Big Sky Scholar Athlete," Wistrcill added.
Roth caught 25 passes for 309 yards and a pair of touchdowns in five seasons with the Mustangs. His best season as a Mustang was his fourth when the Woodinville, Wash., native grabbed 19 passes for 227 yards and one score.
Roth's longest reception was 46 yards from Kahlique Paulette against South Dakota in 2021 while his career high for catches in a game is six against Idaho State in 2021. His touchdown passes were 17 yards from Jalen Hamler against Southern Utah in the spring of 2021 and a six-yarder from Spencer Brasch versus Idaho State in the fall of 2021.
Roth also completed both of his pass attempts for 46 yards, averaged 38.6 yards on 33 punts and notched a pair of solo tackles on special teams. He was Cal Poly's primary punter last fall, averaging 39.0 yards on 22 punts with eight fair catches, six kicks of 50 or moreo yards and five downed inside the 20 with one touchback.
Six Big Sky honorees finished their athletic careers with 4.0 GPAs, while 12 checked in at 3.8 or higher. Roth earned his degree in mechanical engineering at Cal Poly.
To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have exhausted his or her intercollegiate athletic eligibility and/or be a member of the graduating class, earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0) scale, been a participant in a Big Sky-sponsored sport, completed at least two (2) years of intercollegiate competition at the institution, and been a letter winner.
