SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer program unveiled its 18-match 2023 regular season schedule Thursday, featuring eight home matches, five opponents that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year and a trip to the defending national champions.
The Mustangs return 15 letterwinners, six starters and four All-Big West honorees from their 2022 squad that secured the program's first outright Big West regular season title since 2013 and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Once again, all regular season home and Big West matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
Fans will get their first look at the 2023 team when the program hosts its annual Green versus White intrasquad match on Saturday, Aug. 5 at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by Dignity Health French Hospital at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. A week later on Aug. 12, Cal Poly welcomes San Jose State, the 2022 Mountain West Champions, to San Luis Obispo for its first exhibition match. This will mark the second straight season the Mustangs have faced the Spartans in exhibition play.
The Mustangs officially get their 2023 campaign underway on Thursday, Aug. 17, when they travel to Fresno State (1-14-4 in 2022) to open the season. The matchup will be the first regular season battle between the two schools since Sept. 6, 2015, when Cal Poly earned a 4-0 victory in Fresno. Then Cal Poly returns home on Aug. 20, to host its second and final exhibition match against Division II Cal State Monterey Bay.
After wrapping preseason play, the Mustangs head to Los Angeles for a pair of matches. First up is a showdown with UCLA, the 2022 national champions, on Aug. 24, then a matchup with Loyola Marymount on Aug. 27. Last fall, the Bruins (22-2-1) rallied for a thrilling 3-2 victory over North Carolina in double overtime to capture the program's second national title and become the first team in history to overcome a two-goal deficit to win the national title. The meeting will be Cal Poly's first trip to UCLA since the 2010 season opener. The Mustangs' match with LMU (3-8-6 in 2022) will mark their first against the Lions since opening the 2013 season with a 3-0 home victory over the West Coast Conference foe.
Cal Poly caps off its four-game road trip to open the regular season with a visit to Cal on Sept. 3. In 2022, the Golden Bears achieved the team's first top-four finish in the Pac-12 standings since 2015 and fell to Santa Clara in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to end the year with a 10-5-6 overall record. The Mustangs' visit to Berkeley will be their first since the 2016 season opener.
The 2023 home opener is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. when Cal Poly welcomes Gonzaga (10-3-5 in 2022) to Mustang Memorial Field, marking the third straight season the team has faced the Bulldogs. The Mustangs remain at home to face Santa Clara on Sept. 10. Last season, the Broncos (11-7-3 overall) won their third consecutive WCC Championship, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and were ranked No. 22 in the final United Soccer Coaches poll.
The Mustangs head to rival UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 14 to open Big West play. Last year, Cal Poly dominated the Gauchos 4-0 at Mustang Memorial Field to kick-off another impressive conference regular season campaign. Then for the second straight season Cal Poly will play a non-conference match after starting Big West action when they play host to University of Pacific (7-3-10 in 2022) on Sept. 17. The Mustangs travel to Portland (12-5-4 in 2022), who advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round a year ago, on Sept. 23 to wrap up its non-conference slate. Five of Cal Poly's eight non-conference matches this season are against WCC opponents.
Cal Poly takes on Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 28 in its Big West home opener and caps the weekend with a battle against UC Riverside on Oct. 1. The following week, the Mustangs travel to Southern California for a pair of crucial conference matches. Cal Poly faces Long Beach State on Oct. 5 and UC Irvine on Oct. 8. Last fall, the Mustangs fell to LBSU 1-0 in the semifinals of the Big West Championships, while UCI defeated the Beach 3-0 in the Big West Championship match to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Anteaters made it to the third round of the NCAA tourney before suffering a 3-1 defeat to Alabama.
The Mustangs return home to play CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 12 and CSUN on Oct. 15, before heading to UC Davis on Oct. 19 and Hawai'i on Oct. 22.
Cal Poly hosts UC San Diego in its regular season finale on Oct. 26. Last year in La Jolla, a goal from Olivia Ortiz, who is back this fall, in the 53rd minute powered the Mustangs to a 1-0 win over the Tritons and the Big West regular season championship.
The opening round of the Big West Championships is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29. The format for the 2023 conference tournament is the same as last year with top two schools in the 11-team Big West regular season standings receiving byes from the opening round which will feature the third seed hosting the sixth seed, and the fourth seed hosting the fifth seed. The winners of those matches advance to the Big West semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 2 to face the top two seeds at the home field of the No. 1 overall seed. The Big West Championship match will be played on Sunday, Nov. 5, at the No. 1 seed. Last season, Cal Poly hosted the conference tournament for the first time since 2014.
In 2023, the Mustang are seeking at least a share of the Big West regular season title for the third consecutive season and will lean on a talented group of returners in their pursuit. Emma Brown leads a Cal Poly defense that recorded 10 shutouts last year, the program's most in a season since 2009, and seven clean sheets in conference play, a program record. Defending Big West Goalkeeper of the Year Mackenzie Samuel was between the pipes for nine of those shutouts, tied for the third most clean sheets by a Cal Poly goalkeeper in a season in program history. Brown and Samuel both secured All-Big West First Team selections in 2022, while Camryn Penn and Emily Lieber were both named to the Big West All-Freshman Team. All four are back this fall.
