DAVIS, Calif. — Four straight-set singles victories powered Cal Poly women's tennis to a 4-3 dual win over UC Davis on Saturday at Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The Mustangs (10-7, 4-2 Big West) have now won three straight matches, and nine of their last 11. The team also improved to 6-3 in true road matches this season with their four consecutive victory over the Aggies (7-11, 2-5 Big West).
In doubles play, Cal Poly lost at No. 3, but graduate student Kim Bhunu (pictured above) and freshman Kennedy Buntrock secured a 6-4 win at No. 2 to move to 8-5 on the season.
It all came down to No. 1 for the doubles point and Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle fought hard, but came up just short 7-5, allowing UC Davis to grab a 1-0 advantage.
The Mustangs came right back and dismantled the Aggies in singles play. Melissa LaMette was first, dominating her opponent at No. 2 6-2, 6-0 to even the dual at 1-1.
Freshman Alexandra Ozerets was next, cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 in her return to the Mustang lineup. It was her third straight singles victory and the win helped her improve to a team-best 11-3 this spring and 5-1 in Big West matches.
Peyton Dunkle put the Mustangs on the brink of victory, downing her opponent 6-2, 6-2 to improve to 6-1 at the No. 4 spot this season. And Bhunu sealed the deal for Cal Poly, rolling to a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 to clinch the dual. Bhunu is still undefeated in conference play (6-0) and is 8-2 over her last 11 singles matches.
After winning the first set in her match, Buntrock lost a battle at No. 5 via a super tiebreaker, 10-7.
The victory allowed Cal Poly to secure 10 wins for the third consecutive season, their longest since posting five straight 10+ win seasons from 2008-12.
Cal Poly returns to the Mustang Tennis Complex next weekend for their final homestand of the season. The team hosts Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, April 15, and UC Irvine on Sunday, April 16.
